Would You Rather?

Article by Tayleigh

If you’ve visited the Teen Zone you may have noticed the giant white board near the door, but have you ever interacted with it? This summer our reading program is celebrating Adventure and it’s fitting that our Would You Rather Question reflects it. Teens were asked if they would rather:

It was a tight race! 20 teens voted to go on the Cruise while 16 teens voted to backpack. However, one teen answered, “Sweden” and while that’s in Europe, we get the feeling he or she isn’t up for the actual hiking. Lots of teens felt like they could be swayed depending on the details of the cruise and many picked it because they feel like backpacking is generally too exhausting. Most people who picked backpacking chose it because they were afraid of getting seasick (or some version of not liking being on the boat or in the water)!

We invite you to swing by the Teen Zone and make sure you cast your vote on the next poll.

Wildhorse Farmer's Market

Article by Hannah

It's farmer’s market season! You can find all sorts of items as you visit your local market vendors at Wildhorse Park. Excluding Mustang Western Days, the farmer's market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon (June-Sep) and Wednesdays from 6–8 p.m. (June-Aug). The farmer's market sells various products, ranging from fresh produce to creative crafts. Products like cantaloupe, crocheted items, baked goods, potted plants, peppers, homemade bath products, and other fascinating collections are available at the farmer’s market. In addition to the purchasable items, visiting your local farmer’s market would also be a great way to contribute to the community, for it profits small businesses, and the proceeds of the community garden would be put into the garden and charitable organizations. From delicious produce to creative creations made by local members, the farmer's market can be capable of captivating your interest. Local Camping Spots

Article by Trenton and Braxton

Members of the TLC are much like you, they enjoy spending their time doing fun recreational activities with family and friends. One thing your favorite two members, Trenton and Braxton, do is camping! These are our favorite local camping spots that we love to spend time at.

John Nichols Ranch

John Nichols is a very popular campsite for everyone. It is primarily popular with scouting troops. Scouts travel from all over Oklahoma to make a stay for a night, or a week. It is a very cozy place to stay with several sites you could camp at. There are many different options, one of which even has tent borders. I like this camp because there are countless activities to do here, and there is always something you can do. They have games, crafts, hiking, and a huge site to explore! A super special thing about this camp is they have animals you can see. And if they don’t have any when you come, then you can see the animals that walk through the woods and campsites. This is a spectacular place to go with some friends or family. Consider checking it out! It’s only a fifteen-minute drive from the library! I’d recommend you check this out sometime soon! Have fun and make sure to tell the library about your experience!

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is an area located near Lawton. It has some of the best recreational activities to do. I like it because it is full of fun things to do, such as mountain biking, rock climbing, rappelling, hiking, camping, picnic areas, and fishing. I also like the calm nature surrounding the campsites. It also has this cool forty-foot hole that shows its interesting nature. Technically, the camping spot is called Dorris Campground, which offers 47 tent sites, 23 RV sites with electric hookups, and 20 sites. Being in the middle of nowhere, it’s a cool place to go and camp.

Crab Facts

Article by CJ

Crabs are amazing wonders that live in our oceans, and on our beaches. There are well over 4000 species of crabs worldwide, and each one of them has their own special way of living that makes them unique from other crabs. In spirit of the zodiac Cancer, who just so happens to be a crab, I am here to share with you some fun facts about crabs.

  •   Even though they are called crabs, horseshoe crabs are actually more related to spiders than crabs, and there are only 4 known species of them too.
  •  Cancer the crab is the zodiac during the season of June 21 to July 22, and the symbol for cancer is the number 69 on its side ♋
  •  The largest known crab in the world is the Japanese spider crab with a leg span of around 13 meters, meanwhile the smallest is the pea crab which is less than a inch when fully grown.
  •  Most crabs are found in shallow waters called the sunlight zone, and sometimes in the twilight zone, but the deepest a crab has been caught was almost 3300 meters deep!
  • There is a species of crab called the decorator crab that covers its body in coral and other stuff they can find to hide themselves from predators

If you want to learn more crab facts you can check out some books at your local library, my favorite one for crabs is called “ The curious world of the crab”.
