The Grace Year

Article by Hannah Skariah

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett is a book that'll be unlike anything you've read before. The book follows Tierney, a girl tackling the rigid rules of her dystopian society. In her world, when girls turn sixteen, they are sent to an encampment in the forest to get rid of their so-called magic the men claim they possess. As soon as the girls arrive at the camp, a divide arises between them.

Many claim the magic is real, while Tierney believes it to be a made-up concept to create control and chaos. The girls fight, lie, and as tensions build up, people die.

Throughout the story, the girls struggle to understand the lies they've been fed, as well as the hurt inflicted upon them and others. By the end, the girls begin the difficult process of creating a starting point for change. The story follows themes of resilience, survival, and strength in unity. While the heavy aspects make it more suited for older teens, this book is definitely an impactful and interesting read.

Happy Birthday

The Mustang Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! Its history tells us a lot about how the library and Mustang have changed over time.

According to city records, the Mustang Public Library was officially established on April 1, 1980, as the Mustang Municipal Library, but it originally began as a bicentennial project in 1976. It was initially located in a museum, but was later moved to a building on State Highway 152. Throughout the 1980s, the library relocated several times. In fact, the library wasn't located at the Mustang Town Center until 2002.

Additionally, the patronage of the library was significantly less than it is today. According to the Oklahoma Historical Society, Mustang's population was around 7,500 in 1980.

Today, the population of Mustang is estimated to be over 20,000. As our city continues to grow, the library continues to provide a place of learning and community.

Student Advice

Article by CJ Welch

With the new school year slowly sneaking around the corner, I interviewed students from various grades in our high school for advice for incoming students of the next year.

“Even though going into high school seems very scary, don't worry too much about getting lost. Once you get your schedule it's easy to know your day to day route. Also remember to make friends mine are amazing and have helped me plenty of times” Freshman Connor

“In my opinion once after freshman year last year sophomore year just came so much easier to me, especially when finding my classes. Remember to study however because classes don't get easier than freshman year.” Sophomore Brooke

“When going into Junior year it's smart to set up a study group honestly, me and my friends didn't until the second semester and I think we all would have done way better on semester tests if we did it earlier.” Junior Ava

“When going into senior year, you absolutely can not slack off at all. This year is supposed to be the one to truly prepare you for college or whatever you do in your future. Even though you don't have as many tests as previous years, that just means they matter that much more so whatever you do study study study!!” Senior Tyler
