End of Year Prep

Article by CJ

With the school year coming to an end it brings a lot of things, new opportunities to hang out with friends, fun vacation, and watching fireworks, but it also means end of the year tests. So to help with that here is a list of ways you can study for all of your upcoming tests.

-Quizlet: This website/app allows you to search for countless topics of flashcards and you can even make your own. It also comes with fun games to help you study and practice tests to help you know your terms.

-Library books: Going to your local library never fails to help students with test preparation. You can just sit in the library reading, take them home, or you can even ask one of our friendly librarians for help too.

-Study groups: Even though the school year is about to end it is never too late to form a group of friends to study with for these last tests. You can talk to each other while writing notes, take turns quizzing each other, or even coming up with a new way to you help and your friends study.

Summer Reading

Article by Hannah

As the school year ends and summer begins, the start of the Summer Reading Program is slowly approaching! From the themes of Adventure Begins at the Library and Color Our World, this year the library presents Unearth Our Story, a journey through dinosaurs and paleontology. To kick off the start of the program, here are some fun prehistoric facts about Oklahoma:

  • Our state dinosaur is the Acrocanthosaurus atokensis, a dinosaur that was around 40 ft long and had many similarities to the well-known T. rex.
  • Fossils of the dinosaur Deinonychus have been found in Oklahoma. This dinosaur was the inspiration for the velociraptors featured in Jurassic Park. The author, Michael Crichton, used the physical attributes of the Deinonychus, but used the name “Velociraptor” because he thought it was a better fit for the book.
  • Currently, our state fossil is the Saurophaganax maximus. However, recent studies have shown that this species may have actually been a mix of multiple dinosaur fossils!

To participate in the Summer Reading Program and earn prizes, sign up online at Readsquared or visit a registration table at the library. Whether you'd prefer to listen to an audiobook or turn the pages, the library invites you to join! The Summer Reading Program runs from June 1st to July 31st.

Scholarship Tips

Article by Trinity

Scholarships can be one of the most daunting aspects of the college process. It can be difficult to know where to start and when, so here are some tips to help you through your scholarship journey:

  • Do extracurriculars that show leadership, community involvement, or passion
  • Take the ACT or SAT more than once, improving your score opens you up to more scholarships
  • You should start applying for scholarships as soon as possible, but more scholarships open up to high school seniors
  • Make sure to consistently check the grammar and spelling of your essay, especially as you revise. Get someone to help you or use Grammarly.com
  • Don't force yourself to meet a word limit. Sometimes less is more; the most important thing is to meet the word minimum
  • Keep track of all the scholarships you’ve applied for, their amounts, and their deadlines via a calender
  • Keep track of all your essays. Depending on what scholarship you’re applying for, you may be able to reuse one you’ve already written. If you can’t reuse an essay, it’s still important to keep track of all the ones you’ve written for inspiration
  • Make sure you have digital copies of your transcript, recommendation letters, and college acceptance letter (depending on your grade)
  • Scholarship websites tend to have more niche scholarships with lower cash payouts and high competition. Colleges tend to offer big money scholarships that are much more specific and selective. It’s important to research and apply for both
  • Most importantly, apply to any and all scholarships you can!
