Winter the Dolphin

Article by CJ

Three years ago, Winter the dolphin, nicknamed the miracle dolphin, sadly passed away on November 11th and in order to help remember this marvelous dolphin. On December 10th, 2005 Winter was rescued off the coast of Mosquito Lagoon, Florida with her tail ensnared in a crab trap line and although she was freed from the trap, her tail could not be saved and had to be amputated. After being saved she was moved to Clearwater Marine Aquarium (which is also a rehabilitation center for injured marine animals) where she would grow up the rest of her life and inspire millions around the world and be a star actor in her own movies, Dolphin Tale 1 and 2. While Winter settled in the Aquarium, She was eventually fitted for a prosthetic tail which helped her gain the name miracle dolphin. About five years later, the movie “Dolphin Tale” was filmed and told the world about Winter, gaining the aquarium a lot of attention and helped it expand allowing it to house and treat more animals like Winter. About 3 years later, “Dolphin Tale 2” was filmed featuring another dolphin named Hope. Sadly however, 16 years after Winter was rescued by Clearwater, she passed away in the arms of her caretakers leaving thousands if not millions in tears, myself included. She died from intestinal torsion which cut off her blood supply, causing it to be impossible to reach with surgery and treat. Even though Winter has passed on, people can still swim with Winter with Clearwater’s virtual theater in the aquarium that will tell you her story of survival and tell you how much of an impact she has made on the world.

How to Host a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Interactive by Sterling

While many people travel or go to extended family for Thanksgiving, some may prefer to stay home and enjoy their Thanksgiving in solitude or with a few friends. If you have no major plans for this upcoming Thanksgiving or want to break tradition, consider hosting a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Follow the recipe below to host your very own Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.

  • 1 Loaf of sandwich bread and 1 stick of butter.
  • The first step is to toast the entire loaf of bread and then butter it to set aside for later.
  • 3-4 Bags of microwave popcorn, or 2 large bags of pre-popped popcorn.
  • If using microwave popcorn, then you are going to want to cook all the bags and pour them in a big bowl to cool. If you are just using pre-popped popcorn, then just pour the popcorn into a bowl.
  • 1 Big bag of pretzels.
  • Open the bag of pretzels and pour into a bowl.
  • 2 Bags of jellybeans.
  • Cut open the bags and pour into a bowl.
  • Enjoy!

While you and your folks enjoy the meal, you might consider watching “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” which you can rent from our movie section at the library.

NaNoWriMo

Article by Hannah

November 1st marks the start of National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo for short. NaNoWriMo is a writing challenge that started in 1999 by Chris Baty in the San Francisco Bay area, but it has now grown to be a worldwide event. Officially becoming a nonprofit in 2006, NaNoWriMo pushes individuals to write 50,000 words of a novel within 30 days. NaNoWriMo has been the start of many writing careers, but it has also helped many people gain a new passion for writing! Some well-known novels that started as NaNoWriMo drafts are Cinder by Marissa Meyer, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and WithThe Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevado. You can sign up on the official NaNoWriMo website to get access to writing advice and tools and connect with other writers. The website also helps track writing objectives and personal writing accomplishments. Participating in National Novel Writing Month is a great way to unleash your imagination and have fun through the creative writing process.
