Scary Movies

Article by Braxton and Trenton

There are many horror movies at the library, but these There are many horror movies at the library, but these are the scariest pg-13 ones.

3. Poltergeist- This is a classic movie about this normal family getting haunted by supernatural elements. In this movie, there are scenes that make me question the PG rating. Overall it’s a scary movie in the beginning but gets repetitive.

2. The Haunting- This movie is about visitors coming to this secluded mansion. The owner of the mansion starts deriding fear on the visitors. This in turn makes this movie full of small, scary scenes, but overall isn’t this bad.

1. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark- This is about these teens who stumble upon a mansion. They find these books and they aren’t as they seem. The scary event in the books start happening to the teens after they steal the books. This movie had many scary scenes and outright weird moments. Good movie, semi scary.

Haunted Canadian County

Article by Sterling

With Halloween right around the corner many people are seeking out the paranormal. If you want to meet a spooky old ghost who dies again if you touch her things, the Mustang Historical Society is the place for you. The old square building with dated carpet and wood paneling contains a historically accurate one room house. The tenants of this house are quite familiar with the paranormal. In fact, they are paranormal. Ms. Kitty is the lady of the house. She is not afraid to let you know you are not welcome. She hates strangers messing with her things, especially if they do not handle them with delicate care. She is often seen moving back and forth in the doorway of the one room house. Her husband may be seen from time to time, however, he appears to just lay on the bed, perhaps asleep after a long day of work. Ms. Kitty has even remarked over the Ghost Radio that she loves when Carole from the Historical Museum plays her the piano. If you want to begin the spooky season with some paranormal interactions, be sure to stop by the Mustang Historical Society and have a quick chat with Ms. Kitty. If you are interested in learning of more Mustang paranormal sites check out “Haunted Canadian County” by Tanya McCoy & Whitney Wilson from the Mustang Library.

Ube

Article Trenton and Braxton

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.

Add powdered ube to boiling water until a thick paste forms to get rehydrated ube. Set aside to cool and cover to keep moist.

  • 3 tbsp Powdered Ube
  • ½ cup Water

In a stand mixer bowl at medium speed, add in egg whites and slowly mix in granulated sugar. Then add egg yolks, one at a time, until incorporated. Sift in cake flour on medium speed. Afterwards, combine 50 grams of rehydrated ube, ube flavoring, violet food coloring, and vegetable oil. Slowly mix for 30 seconds until just combined.

  • 4 Eggs
  • ½ cup Granulated Sugar
  • 40 grams Cake Flour
  • ½ tsp Ube Flavoring
  • ¼ tsp Violet Food Coloring
  • 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil

Grease a quarter sheet pan, 9 by 13 inches, and place parchment paper on top. Spread out cake batter into a thin layer and tap on counter to remove any bubbles. Place in 325°F oven for 10-15 minutes until it springs back when touched. Place on cooling rack for about 20 minutes until completely cooled. On a stovetop place a large pot of water and bring to a simmer. In a new stand mixer bowl combine egg whites, sugar, and vanilla extract. Place bowl over the large pot of simmering water and stir until it reaches 160°F. Then place in a stand mixer and mix at high speed for 5 minutes until it triples in volume and cools off. Ideally until room temperature.

  • 6 ½ ounces Egg Whites
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract

Put stand mixer on medium speed and slowly add in softened sticks (room temperature) butter, half a stick at a time, and wait for it to be completely incorporated before adding the next half stick of butter.

  • 4 sticks Butter; softened

After that's done, place on high speed for another minute until it is smooth and creamy. Check cake to see if it's completely cooled and flip over onto parchment paper. Slowly remove parchment paper from bottom. Flip over once again so it is facing up like it did when it came out of the oven. Over with buttercream icing. Buttercream Icing Slowly roll it up lengthwise. Put in fridge for at least an hour for it to become firm. Take out, add 3 dollops of buttercream.
